Hurling legend Henry Shefflin officially opened Aldi’s landmark 100th Irish store in Callan, Co. Kilkenny yesterday.

The opening of Aldi’s landmark 100th store in Callan also marks Stewart’s 50th project for Aldi Stores (Ireland).

Stewart began working for Aldi when they first came to Ireland in 1999 and are proud to have now completed 50 stores nationwide from their first project in Westside, Galway to Aldi Stores in all 26 counties!

Aldi Stores (Ireland) is to create 300 new jobs in Ireland within the next three years as part of an expansion programme of its Irish store network.

The expansion programme will see Aldi open 20 new stores, with each store employing 15 people.

The new stores will be located throughout the country including East Wall Road in Dublin, Greystones in Co. Wicklow, Tralee in Co. Kerry, Ballybofey in Co. Donegal and Charleville in Co. Cork.

Speaking at the opening of Aldi’s 100th Irish store in Callan, Co. Kilkenny, Niall O’Connor, Group Buying Director of Aldi Stores (Ireland) said, “We are delighted to reach the milestone of opening 100 Irish stores today and would like to thank everyone who has shopped and supported us over the past 13 years. Our new multi-million euro investment underpins our ongoing commitment and support to Ireland, our customers, staff and Irish suppliers, producers and manufacturers. We pledge to continue offering Irish consumers the highest quality groceries and prices that can’t be matched for many more years to come.”

Aldi has been the standout performer in the Irish grocery market in recent years, maintaining its position as the fastest growing supermarket in the country since July 2008. Aldi experienced 30.7pc growth in sales for the twelve week period leading up to St. Patrick’s Day this year, increasing its share of the Irish grocery market to approximately 6.2pc.

Open House, Galway’s Architectural Festival continues to defy the odds, adapt and grow, to show case the best of our Architectural heritage in Galway City and County. After all, Architecture and the built environment are our best asset in attracting visitors and making Galway City and County a very pleasant and vibrant place to live.

Now in its fourth year, Open House Galway takes its place among the Architectural Festival Family worldwide which includes Chicago, London, Lisbon, Helsinki and Dublin, to name a few, held at this time of year. Smaller in scale, Féile Ailtireachta na Gaillimhe brings our rich physical environment into the limelight, and reinforces Galway as the cultural capital of Ireland. Open House allows you to experience great Architecture, both old and new, up close and personal. The Festival affords an insight into many buildings not normally open to the public.

A new €4.2 million school building for Rushbrooke national school in Cobh, Co Cork built by Stewart, will be officially opened this morning by Minister of State for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock.

The existing school had surpassed its capacity, and a new school was required for over 700 pupils on the same site.

In February 2010, then minister for education Batt O’Keeffe gave the green light to Rushbrooke national school for a new building. Members of the local community had campaigned for the new school arising out of a dependence on prefabs and the growing population in the area.

The new building is a two-storey, 24-classroom school with a special needs unit, sports hall, library, staff facilities and administration. It measures 4,205sq m.

Work began on the new school in July of last year.

Rushbrooke national school is one of thousands of schools registered on An Taisce’s green schools programme and educates 709 pupils. It has 24 mainstream class teachers, three special class teachers and ancillary staff.
