Stewarts win awards at CIOB Construction Manager of the Year Awards 2010-2011

Two of Stewarts Contracts Managers accepted awards at the CIOB Construction Manager of the Year Awards announced at the CIOB CMYA awards dinner in Bewleys Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin on Friday, June 10th.

Paul Stewart won 1st in the category of Green Buildings (all values) and also came 2nd in the category of projects between €10m – €30m. Both awards were for his role in the construction of the OPW Decentralised Government Offices in Roscommon, a Design/ Build competition promoted by the OPW, to procure new offices for the Property Registration Authority in Roscommon Town. This building is the first design and build Public Building in Ireland to be classified as ‘EXCELLENT’ under BREEAM (International Awards) sustainability standards.

Brian Gorman claimed third place in the projects under €10m category for “The Street” at GMIT. This project consisted of the building of a new link building which forms a street through the existing college campus area, a contract where the co-ordination and management of the works were crucial considering the location of the work site in a “live” campus environment.

Other finalists included the Construction Managers for projects such as Aviva Stadium, O2 Arena, The Criminal Courts of Justice and The National Convention Centre.

In a long and distinguished history, Stewarts, now building for 109 years, has accumulated a vast portfolio of prominent public and private sector projects and has continued to remain profitable, despite the severity of the recession in construction work and are currently in a period of managed growth.

Government Offices in Tipperary Town

Stewarts start on site on Design & Build Decentralised Government Offices in Tipperary.

This project is a result of a competition to design and build new offices for local and national government in Tipperary Town, which was won by STEWART.

The scheme is located in a green field site located at the edge of the town.

The offices are designed as public buildings in a new public space anchored by existing mature beech trees and enclosed by stone walls, which share a palette of form, scale, fenestration and materials.  They are clearly seen to enclose separate functions with the council chamber clearly expressed to give prominence to the seat of local government.

The new civic space extends across the public road to strengthen pedestrian links to the town centre.  The landscape is designed to create semi private garden spaces to the offices and utilise landscape features and ponds to control storm water, and improve biodiversity. Carparking is located to the rear of both buildings in landscaped secure area, enclosed by rebuilt stone walls.

Each building is entered into a full height atrium to provide ease of movement and orientation. Office spaces are relatively narrow to ensure a comfortable, natural lit and ventilated work environment. The structure is highly insulated with ceiling soffits exposed to provide high thermal mass to moderate the internal conditions. Vertical air shafts are provided in both buildings to allow future provision of assisted ventilation to future proof against climate change. Most offices spaces have east and west aspects with solar louvre protection provided to south elevations.

The energy demands of the buildings have a BER of B1/A3.
